Instrumentarium is Boris Hegenbart's new focus on the formal coordinates and techniques of Dub music. It never sounds like this idiom is coming from the reggae tradition in Jamaica, but even if we leave aside the style considerations, it's the essence of Dub itself that we find here in all its transformative power.

Adikia is phenomenal, a scattered, moving dissembling of a moment. With music like this, there seems to be an obvious marriage between composition and improvisation, where the composer creates a set of moments, or rules, or an environment within which each musician is free to fill spaces accordingly. This group does this masterfully, which is to be expected. Alongside longtime favorites, like Kai Fagaschinski (clarinet), Werner Dafeldecker (double bass), and Paul Wirkus (percussion), are revelations, like Eva Reiter (viola di gamba, subcontrabass recorder) and Bjorn Gottstein (viola). Todosch's performance on voice, especially, is flooring. Whatever Ehlers set in front of each of these musicians, each brought ample personality and a mastery of their moment.

He started in Cologne in 1998, and after moving to Berlin some years later, he recently relocated again to lovely Perpignan in the southern part of France, not far from the Spanish border. In Perpignan the sun even shines where the sun doesn’t shine, and Markus Detmer became basshead Monsieur Croque. Restraint is a key word in the Trapist musical vocabulary which is no wonder as the group's name relates to the Trappist fraternity whose devotion is demonstrated by their silence. Whereas on previous albums the group often relied on drastical editing and melodic ornamentation in order to escape restraint, 'The Golden Years' displays a newly gained maturity which is breathtaking: Trapist bring the attack and release game to a climax never heard before. Sharp shocks of black and white with some golden silence in between.
Drawing from both a wide variety of influences ranging from space rock to improvised minimal music, and from folk-influenced psychedelia to noise as well as the members' numerous collaborations the band has managed to establish an unique ensemble sound defying categorization, blending both acoustic and electronic instruments as well as blurring the gaps between improvisational music and prestructured forms. Their blend of sparse improvisation and delicate electronics is a welcome and refreshing change for fans of electronic and free music of all types.
